Biography

Dr. Susan Lipkins, a psychologist for twenty five years, is a leading authority in campus conflict and violence in high schools and colleges. She is an author and expert in the field of hazing. Lipkins has appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Sky TV, The Today Show, The O'Reilly Factor, Good Morning America, CBS News, Inside Edition, CNN, SportsNet, Court TV and on over 100 other radio and television programs.

In addition, Dr. Lipkins has been quoted or published in USA Today, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, The Daily News, Newsday, as well as many other newspapers, magazines and websites.

As an expert in campus violence and hazing, she has addressed audiences, throughout the country. In May, Dr. Lipkins delivered the Key Note Address to more than 300 administrators, educators and lawyers at a conference sponsored by the New Jersey Bar Association. In July, she will address the American Association for Justice. Dr. Lipkins has spoken with college students and administrators at various locations ranging from Stonybrook University to Amherst College. She has addressed high school administrators, educators, coaches and students in various settings throughout the country.

Dr. Lipkins' book, Preventing Hazing: How Parents, Teachers and Coaches Can Stop the Violence, Harassment, and Humiliation, is the only source for psychological information on hazing. Written with clarity and passion, Preventing Hazing uncovers the deep roots of hazing, how and why it permeates schools, colleges, and communities, and what parents, teachers, and coaches can do to prevent it.

Dr. Lipkins established a production company, Reel Psychology, with the primary goal of creating films and television programs that help reduce the stigma towards psychological issues. She has produced demos entitled: "Sleepless in America" and a documentary entitled "Betrayal", (which tells the stories of hazardous hazing in high schools.) To further her goals, Dr. Lipkins hopes to create an internet site that provides user-friendly information on a wide variety of issues relating to mental health.

Dr. Lipkins has also invented a game, Be A Star, which is a simple and effective magnetic chart that gives parents a structured method of discipline. This game improves self-control in children aged 3 to 14. Everyone wins by increasing communication, respect and self-esteem; while changing the behaviors of parents and children.

Dr. Lipkins' first investigative research occurred under the direct supervision of famed anthropologist, Dr. Margaret Mead, and resulted in a paper entitled Marriage Patterns on the Kibbutz. Her master's thesis, The Process of Art in Young Children and her doctoral dissertation, Recurrent Abdominal Pain in Pre-Adolescent Girls, are among her early works.

Dr. Lipkins has been in private practice as a psychologist helping adults, adolescents and children to overcome a wide range of problems. She has been a school psychologist, college professor and a consultant. She began her career teaching in day care and at Blythedale Children's Hospital.

Dr. Lipkins earned her B.A. from Fordham University, and a M.S. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education from the Bank Street College of Education. She has Ph.D. in School Psychology from Yeshiva University. Dr. Lipkins also graduated from Adelphi University's Derner Institute, receiving post-doctoral certification in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.

Dr. Lipkins is a member of the American Psychological Association, and The National Institute of Sports-Division of Sports Psychologists.
