By Maryanne George Free Press Ann Arbor Bureau September 24, 2003 Sigma Chi, one of the oldest fraternities at the University of Michigan, was kicked off campus Tuesday following a hazing incident that sent a pledge to the hospital with kidney failure, officials said. U-M spokeswoman Julie Peterson said the young man was part of an eight-member pledge class. During the week of Sept. 8, he was deprived of food and water and forced to do calisthenics. The incident was discovered when the youth's mother told officials her son had been hospitalized with muscle breakdown that led to acute kidney failure, Peterson said. **2003 Long Island, New York Bay Shore High School A medium-sized town located on Long Island in New York, experienced a case of hazing. The varsity boy's volleyball team had twenty-four boys on the team, twelve freshmen, one sophomore, ten juniors, and one senior. Four of the juniors and a senior were kicked off the team for physical and verbal threats to the freshmen on the team. The five players would hit and punch the freshmen, claiming it was their birthday, or so they said. They were charged for threatening to beat the underclassmen up if they messed up during practice or in the games, although none of the teammates heard the threats. The five boys were kicked off the team and suspended from school. The school had also considered disallowing the boys to join any other sports. The students also faced a punishment of going to sensitivity classes, where they filled out papers stating what they are proud of, whom they idolize, things they would like to change, etc. They also were instructed to write a short paper on what their definition of a bully is and compared themselves to one.
